Barguna Sadar Upazila (Barguna district) with an area of 454.39 sq km, is surrounded by Betagi, Mirzaganj and Patuakhali Sadar sadar upazilas on the north, the Bishkhali river and patharghata and bamna upazilas on the west, the burishwar river and amtali upazila on the east and the bay of bengal on the south. 

Barguna (Town) The town is a municipality (estd. 1973) with an area of 15.57 sq km and population 26484; male 53.89%, female 46.11%. It has 9 wards and 18 mahallas. Literacy rate among the town people is 56.6%. The town has three dakbungalows.

Administration Barguna Sadar thana was turned into an upazila in 1982. The upazila consists of one municipality, 13 union parishads, 62 mouzas and 189 villages. Historical events During the war of liberation the Pak army killed a number of innocent persons in the out lying area of the Barguna Town. Before they finally withdrew from Barguna in December the Pak army killed a few freedom fighters.

Land control Among the peasants 36% are landless, 27% small, 27% medium and 10% rich. 

Value of land The market value of the first grade land is about Tk. 5000 per 0.01 hectare.

Hats, bazars and fairs Total hats and bazars are 16, most noted of which are Gaurchinna, Babuganj and Chandkhali; Barguna Baishakhi Mela is notable.

Main exports Palm molasses, Hilsa fish.
