Jessore Sadar Upazila (Jessore district) with an area of 432.82 sq km, is surrounded by Kaliganj (Jhenaidaha) and Bagherpara upazilas on the north,Abhaynagar and Manirampur upazilas on the south, Bagherpara and Narail Sadar upazilas on the east and Jhikarghacha upazila on the west. 

Noted rivers are Bhairab and Mukteshwari; beel 3.

Jessore (Town) stands on the Bhairab, consists of 9 wards and 73 mahalls. Jessore municipality was established in 1864. The area of the town is 25.72 sq km. The town has a population of 1178273; male 52.97%, female 47.03%. Literacy rate among the town people is 56.57%. The town has one dakbungalow. 

Administration Jessore Sadar upazila consists of one municipality, 9 wards, 15 union parishads, 317 mouzas and 177 villages. Archaeological heritage and relics Remnants of the Chanchara Rajbari, Kali Mandir, remnants of the palace of Raja Patal Bhedi at Sheikhati (Pala and Sena period), Bigraha of Bhubeneshwari Devi built by Laskan Sen at Sheikhati, Imam Bari built by Haji Muhammad Muhsin at Murli. 

Historical events The Bangali soldiers posted at Jessore cantonment revolted against the Pak army on 29 March 1971 led by Capt Hafiz Uddin and Lt Anwar in which about 300 soldiers were killed. The freedom fighters killed 50 Pak soldiers by machine gun at Chanchara.
