Kathalia Upazila (Jhalokati district) with an area of 152.08 sq km, is surrounded by Rajapur and Bhandaria upazilas on the north, Bamna and Betagi upazilas on the south, Betagi upazila on the east, Bhandaria and Mathbaria upazilas on the west. Noted rivers: Bishkhali, Gajalia and Nalbunia; Chhonautar Beel is notable.
Kathalia (Town) consists of two mouzas. The area of the town is 7.42 sq km. It has a population of 8205; male 50.36%, female 49.64%; density of population is 1106 per sq km. Literacy rate among the town people is 52.6%. The town has three dakbungalows.
Administration Kathalia thana was established in 1930 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. It consists of 6 union parishads, 47 mouzas and 52 villages. Historical events During the War of Liberation a fierce encounter was held between the Pak army and the freedom fighters at Amua in which many people were killed and many wounded.
