Narayanganj Sadar Upazila (Narayanganj district) with an area of 100.75 sq km, is surrounded by Demra thana on the north, Munshiganj Sadar and Tongibari upazilas on the south, Bandar (Narayanganj) upazila on the east, Keraniganj and Serajdekhan upazilas on the west. 

Narayanganj (Town) a municipal town (estd. in 1876), consists of 8 wards and 76 mahallas. The area of the town is 18.7 sq km. It has a population of 230294; male 53.51%, female 46.49%. The density of population is 12315 per sq km. The literacy rate among the town people 60.2%. (see Narayanganj Port City) 

Administration established in 1986 the upazila consists of one municipality, 10 union parishads, 54 mouzas and 133 villages. 

Archaeological heritage and relics Isa Khan's fort at Hajiganj and tomb of Bibi Mariam. 

History and heritage Pakistan army raided the village of Raktabali of Fatulla area on 29 November 1971 and indiscriminately killed many people. They also killed many people inside Jamuna Oil Depot located at Fatulla. 

Population 604561; male 55.89%, female 44.11%; Muslim 91.98%, Hindu 7.93%, others 0.09%.

Literacy and education institutions Average literacy 48.6%; male 55.4%, female 41.8%. 

Educational institutions: college 6, government high school 2, non-government high school 33, government primary school 104, non-government primary school 30, madrasa 14. The important institution is Narayanganj High School.

Traditional transport Sailing boat, palanquin (extinct) and horse carriage (nearly extinct).

Manufactures Hosiery 1500, garments 176, dying mill 135, flour mill 80, steel rolling mill 30, vegetable oil 10, aluminum factory 20, textile mill 29, jute mill 3, paper mill 2. 

Adamjee Jute Mill is located in this upazila.

Hats, bazars and fairs Hats and bazars are 70, fair 10, most noted of which are Fatulla cattle market, Pagla and Raktabali Hat, Deovogh Lakshminarayan Akhra Mela and Fatulla Baishakhi Mela. Main export Jute and jute products, garments products.
