Patharghata Upazila (Barguna district) with an area of 387.36 sq km, is surrounded by Mathbaria and Bamna upazilas on the north, the bay of bengal on the south, barguna sadar and the river Bishkhali on the east, sarankhola upazila and the river Haringhata on the west, 

Main rivers are Bishkhali and Haringhata. 

Patharghata (Town) consists of 9 wards and 5 mahallas. The area of the town is 18.31 sq km. The town has a population of 13060; male 51.41%, female 48.59%; density of population is 713 per sq km. Literacy rate among the town people is 50.7%. The town has 2 dakbungalows.

Administration Patharghata thana was turned into an upazila in 1982. The upazila consists of 7 union parishads, 42 mouzas and 67 villages.
